General Information

Among all the Legacy Amps that Z-Fanatics have clamored to make a return to the regular roster, the Z-28 stands at the top of the heap. From 2021 through 2022, Dr. Z took an opportunity not to just put out the “same old” design from back when the Z-28, alongside the Route 66 and Stang Ray stood firmly in the middle of his award-winning roster, but give it the MK II designation, which has been nothing but a home run in the MAZ lineup of amps. What does this mean? Why take what was such a lauded amp and mess with the recipe? Well Dr. Z has never been one to rest on his laurels, so the Z-28 Mk. II became his latest obsession.

The Z-28 Mk. II starts with his classic EF-86 preamp design: a high voltage, high fidelity, and high headroom preamp tube that literally inhales your guitar signal and fires it through the circuit path, creating a three dimensional experience unlike the more common 12ax7 preamp designs; it’s a sound that is full of harmonics, with immediate dynamic response, and percussive power. Set clean, rich, clear tones shimmer from the speaker and seamlessly integrate any effect, be it overdrive, distortion, time-based, or modulation, molding them into your playing experience as if the effects were built straight into the amp. Turn the gain up past noon and experience overdrive and even-order harmonics that are unmistakable and unique to the EF-86 design. As many players have described it, this is not unlike layering a distorted amp with a clean amp, with stunning clarity from each string, giving the overdriven signal a studio-like quality in the room.

As many Z-28 aficionados will notice, the power section has received an upgrade, sporting dual 5881 power tubes pushing the output power up to 30 bold, muscular watts. Dr. Z’s experience with these power tubes in the Z-MASTER and NOVA have put them up at the top of his design list, allowing the player to coax American-esque clean tones reminiscent of the mid 60s, but also drive them into harmonic overload similar to the classic British amps of the “Invasion” era, without the quirky artifacts found in those designs. Further separating it from both the older Z-28 and those vintage designs, the inclusion of the Mk. II-style Post-Phase Inverter Master Volume allows for volume control at any decibel level, from stage to studio, bedroom to practice room. What’s old is new again!

Marking our 35th Anniversary in business, Dr. Z presents the Carmen Ghia as a 1×10 combo, an amplifier design that has been in continual production in our lineup and is the first model sold under the Dr. Z banner. With its inception in 1988, the Carmen Ghia launched the business: a company that has weathered over 3 decades in the musical instrument marketplace without faulter, firmly establishing the Dr. Z name amongst music’s greats, past, present, and future. The Carmen Ghia is the distillation of the company’s goal: manageable volume, jaw-dropping tone, without compromise, utilizing a pure, direct signal path from amp, to speaker, to audience.

Early in the company’s history, Dr. Z would visit Ohio area guitar shows with the Carmen Ghia in tow. A seemingly diminutive 18-watt amp was a curiosity in the 1980s, a musical era marked by the mantra of “more, more, more.” More watts, more channels, more knobs, but backbreaking weight, headaches from complex signal routing, and frustration from multiple points of failure. Dr. Z had a unique package with 2 knobs, one channel, all hand-wired; a striking concept. During the hours before these events were open to the public, other vendors would have the opportunity to peruse each other’s gear and to his surprise and amusement, the majority of the sales he would make during these shows would be to the guitar shops and luthiers that were exhibiting alongside him! The typically jaded vendors who had thought that had “heard it all” found the Carmen Ghia to be the perfect vessel to exhibit the various guitars they were selling, as it was a no-frills, plug-and-play amp that sounded great and demonstrated the genuine voice of the guitar and player that were plugged into it. This experience birthed Dr. Z’s credo: “volume, tone, what more do you need?”

Fast-forward to 2023, the 35th Anniversary edition of the Carmen Ghia is built to the exact same specifications as it always has been, hand-wired by veteran builders in our Cleveland, OH shop. This year we have added one important feature: a post-phase inverter master volume (PPIMV) that has been specifically integrated into the circuit to achieve versatile low-volume overdrive, but remain entirely out of the signal path when turned to its maximum setting. Pair this with a light weight 1×10 cabinet loaded with a WGS Veteran 30 10” speaker (the first Dr. Z/WGS pairing in company history), and you have a unique, yet simple, elegant, but easy to dial-in amplifier perfect for small gigs, studio sessions,  prayer/worship use, and at-home practice. To top off our 35th birthday with a “cherry,” Dr. Z has hand-selected his favorite EL84 variant for this amp, a pair of NOS 6n14n power tubes, matched and tested in our shop, making the amp ready for years of rugged reliability and rich tone.

The Ghia 1×10 combo is in limited production through 2023 and comes branded with a 35th Anniversary commemorative badge on its grill cloth, as well a special Certificate of Authenticity signed by its designer, Mike Zaite, aka Dr.Z.

General Information

Entering production 10 years ago, the original Z Wreck amplifier has reached somewhat of a legendary status among Z players, being a hallmark collaborative effort between Dr. Z, the late amplifier guru Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Amps, and country music star Brad Paisley. All three combined their thoughts and wishes for a perfect stage-worthy amp then launched the Z Wreck, a design that has become a “halo product” for Dr. Z.

Yet being a non-master volume amp, reining in the Z Wreck’s robust volume has always been a concern for working musicians who require a controllable sonic footprint for smaller venues and less raucous gigs, but demand the tactile response and dynamic expressiveness found the amp. Controlling the loudness without compromising the character and harmonic overtones of the original Z Wreck formula became the challenge Dr. Z took up over nearly a year of development.

The new Z Wreck Jr. answers all concerns. As a half-powered sibling of the original Z Wreck, the Z Wreck Jr. introduces a post-phase inverter master volume circuit into the design ideal for studios, small clubs, and worship venues. Now the magical place between chiming clean and blooming overdrive the Z Wreck was lauded for is at the player’s fingertips at any volume level, be it full bore on stage or at home in the practice room. This master volume circuit shares a similar design to the master volume players have been raving about over the last few years that are found in our MK. II series of MAZ amps, the JETTA, and the NOVA.

The Z Wreck Jr. retains the attention to detail, reliability, and quality of workmanship found in all Dr. Z amps, using the exact same turret board construction and aircraft grade aluminum chassis of the original amp. We use the same reissue Tung Sol preamp tubes and NOS military grade 6n14n power tubes, as prescribed by Ken Fischer and true to the Trainwreck DNA. A 5Y3 rectifier tube controls the touch sensitivity and blooming response of the amp by reproducing the plate voltages found at the “comfort” setting in the original Z Wreck, making for a truly addicting playing experience.

Featuring a more price-conscious cost than its larger counterpart, the Z Wreck Jr. is available in head or top-mounted 1×12 combo, the same dimensions as the standard Z Wreck but at a back-saving weight of 44 lbs. It is loaded with a Celestion Greenback 12” speaker, heard on a myriad of classic recordings over the past half a century.

BRAND NEW FROM DR. Z!

With the JETTA, Dr. Z aimed to capture a unique sound suited for any level of guitarist, from amateur hobbyist to professional player at a price that would turn heads. From painstakingly auditioning guitar after guitar, tweaking, adjusting, and coaxing out the best tones from each model, Dr. Z molded the JETTA. This amp was engineered to provide an articulate and detailed platform for any guitar, be it vintage single coil or hotrodded humbucker. Notes seemingly leap from the fretboard and chords are reproduced with remarkable clarity and sustain. The JETTA produces the true sound of your guitar without compromise.

Starting with a pair of 7591 power tubes at its heart, the JETTA’s signature sound is one of near hi-fi accuracy with a soundstage far larger than its small package would belie. The circuit topology provides a streamlined, effective signal path from guitar to speaker: a volume knob to adjust the gain and saturation, a single tone knob to quickly adjust for any guitar you plug in, and an attenuator-like master volume knob provides control at any volume level, with no loss of tonal integrity, detail, or bandwidth. Don’t let the simplicity of the JETTA fool you. Plug in a guitar and you won’t find yourself nudging the tone knob much shy of noon to find that sweet spot. Trust us, we have tried it; sonic bliss is a simple recipe!

The JETTA’s 30 watts provides plentiful clean headroom for the player with even the most robust pedalboard, yet it’s able to grind out thick overdrive at a controllable volume level. For those players that prefer achieve tube distortion from the JETTA, we have included the stellar to retain signal integrity through any path of modulation, delay, or reverb effects.

Despite being the most affordable amp in the Dr. Z line, no corner was cut, no exception was made; the JETTA is hand-wired in Cleveland, OH with the premium components (including Jupiter caps, Heyboer power transformer, and Triad output transformer) used in all of our models. Our ultra-resonant, ultra-lightweight studio 1×12 cabinet comes loaded with a UK-made Celestion H30, and weighs a portable 34lbs.

Introducing the fully enclosed Brake Lite SA (Stand Alone.) Same guts as the combo mount Brake Lite, but able to be tossed in the gig bag for use with many different amps on the fly. The Brake Lite SA works with any tube amp up to 45 watts and can be used with 4, 8, or 16, ohm loads. The SA features 2 speaker outs that are wired in parallel. You can now run multiple cabs with ease.

The Brake Lite SA measures 6″ x 5″ x 3 ¼” and weighs in at 1 ½ lbs. Four ½” feet give plenty of clearance for resting on top of your amp. At the Zero setting the Brake Lite SA is fully bypassed. Each click yields more attenuation: 1=2dB, 2=5dB, 3=8dB, and 4=11dB.

Always use speaker cable to connect the Brake Lite SA to your speaker. When connecting a second cab you will be making a parallel load. Ex: a pair of 8 ohm cabs use the 4 ohm speaker out on your amp.

From Dr. Z:

As many Z-28 aficionados will notice, the power section has received an upgrade, sporting dual 5881 power tubes pushing the output power up to 35 bold, muscular watts.

Also taking from the Z-MASTER, Dr. Z loaded the Z-28 Mk. II into it’s extremely resonant and lightweight cabinet, replacing the 3-hole baffle with a 1×12 design and a Celestion Creamback, a speaker noted for it’s full, articulate midrange and warm, smooth high end. The Z-faithful will also welcome the return of the red tolex (1×12 combo only) back to the lineup for this amp exclusively, matching the stylish trim of the muscle cars of yesteryear this amp takes its inspiration from. Muscular but sleek, nimble without being outclassed under the hood, the Z-28 Mk. II takes a legendary Z-AMP design into 2022.

General Information

At first glance, the Carmen Ghia looks rather, well, modest. This is why the Ghia leaves so many people floored from the first note. Clean notes come out with a warmth, complexity, and sustain like one has never heard from such a small amp. Every note has a hugeness to it that seems far beyond an 18 watt head. All this comes before the amp really starts to sing. As you turn the Volume clockwise, the fun factor increases. The big clean notes get even BIGGER than they were before. Sustain becomes as smooth and musical as you have ever heard it. Notes seem to sing forever. This is an incredibly fun amp, and you’ll have trouble putting your guitar down. The Carmen Ghia interacts with the player because the player can feel the power tube distortion.

This amp has become a favorite in recording studios around the world. It’s also a great little amp for small clubs. While many other small amps have trouble cutting through the mix and have a rather flatulent low end, your Dr. Z Carmen Ghia will always cut through the mix tightly and musically.

From Dr. Z:

General Information

Originally designed as a “grab-and-go” studio and small club amp, the MAZ 18 has made its way to some of the largest stages in the country. Don’t confuse “18 Watts” with “weak and flabby”. The MAZ 18 will amaze you with its definition and headroom, all the way down to the low E…plenty of power for a single 12″ speaker or 2×10″ speakers. You’ll use this amp in small clubs and never think about needing to mic it. Got a larger venue? Mic the MAZ 18 and play away, because big amp tone and soul is all there. This is also a great amp for jazz guitarists, whether you’re looking to replace a small blackface amp or looking for an amp with enough complexity for fusion.

The MAZ 18 is an amp that every Strat or Tele player will love, but it’s not only for single coil players as humbuckers are right at home with the MAZ 18 too. You get great hard rock drive at any volume with the Hi input or use the Lo input for cleaner humbucker sounds. The “Cut” knob may be the most useful and versatile tone shaping tool on any guitar amp. The “Cut” knob is best used after the EQ is all set; turn it up for extra edge, turn it down for a more vintage sound. Throughout its range, it produces a large variety of sounds to satisfy players using all guitars for most every style of music.

The master volume is post-phase inverter which allows you to achieve whisper quiet volumes with no loss of tone or gain, great for home practice sessions. The variable boost footswitch gives a great lead boost which effectively makes the MAZ 18 a 2 channel amp. The MAZ 18 is powered by a pair of NOS Russian Mil-Spec 6n14n power tubes rated to last twice as long as other EL84 variants.

MAZ 18 Mk.II

The MAZ 18 has become Dr. Z’s most popular model over the last 20 years of it’s production. We have listened to player feedback, and over the course of the last 5 years developed improvements in every facet of the circuit.

Included in the Maz 18 Mk.II:

-New, versatile voicing providing pristine American cleans, chiming British overdrive, and juicy hard rock crunch in one package.

-Specifically tuned post-phase inverter master volume allows you dial in your tone at any volume, down to whisper quiet.

-Ultra-light cabinet made from imported Italian poplar (2×12 not included).

-Improved spring reverb for subtle richness or splashy surf tones.

-Buffered effects loop for seamless, transparent integration with your pedalboard.

-New Old Stock Russian mil-spec 6n14n (EL84) power tubes rated to last twice as long as new production EL84s.

-Variable boost footswitch is included, providing anywhere from a small bump in volume to all-out, singing distortion.

Testimonials

“I have the new Mk II Maz 18 and I am tickled to death every time I turn it on. I’m so impressed with this amp. I have managed to get the perfect “Allman brother” live tone except with my own sound infused if that makes sense. I’ve gone from using 3 drives, massive delays, and massive reverbs with my 73’ Bassman to nothing but my guitar, Timmy drive, and Maz 18 Mk II. No need for all of those non essential pedals when you have amazing tone. I want to thank Dr. Z for giving me this amazing experience and freeing my mind from tap dancing pedals to just playing and my style of playing. Definitely making me a better player!”
